1901 census... Aged 3, he was living at Anchor Lane,High Street,Lakenheath with his father- Joseph RUTTERFORD [28], postman; mother- Esther Ann (née GATHERCOLE) [28]; sister- Elsie H [2] brother- Edgar H [1]. All were born in Lakenheath. 1911 census...Aged 13, farm labourer living in High Street, Lakenheath with his father Joseph, now an engine driver-threshing machine, mother Esther Ann, sister Elsie, brother Edgar and new siblings; sisters Gertrude E [9]; Emma L [8]; Nellie M [6] Mabel [5]; Dorothy H [2] and brother Joseph H [2 months], all born in Lakenheath. After Arthur's death the family address was 1 Goward's Yard, High Street,Lakenheath. |

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. The 7th Suffolks in July 1915 were in the Ploegsteert area south of Ypres. Alternating every six days in the front line with the 9th Essex. When in support they were mainly engaged in working parties, digging in wires, filling sandbags or handling bricks, all the mundane tasks the infantry man so enjoys!. The battalion only had 3 men killed that week, so presumably were in a support role. Only CWGC have Arthur as killed on the 5th July, all other records show 6th July. The war diary had no casualties on 6th but records one man killed "looking over the parapet" on the 5th. |
